Businessman nabbed with 75 liquor bottles at BIA

Katunayaka, September 30 (Daily Mirror) - A 38-year-old businessman from Puttalam, was arrested by Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) officers early yesterday (30) at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) while attempting to smuggle out 75 bottles of foreign liquor worth around Rs. 1 million.

The suspect, who is not an airline passenger, had purchased the liquor from the airport’s duty-free shopping complex and packed the bottles into five suitcases. He then attempted to take them out through the airport’s "Green Channel" at the arrivals terminal, which requires no declaration.

PNB officers arrested him near the airport bank premises at around 2.40 a.m. Investigations revealed that the suspect had last traveled abroad on August 17, 2024.

The arrest comes just weeks after two airport security officers, including a Sri Lanka Intelligence Unit officer, were detained while attempting to smuggle out a stock of gold biscuits from the airport.
