Businessman nabbed at BIA with foreign-made cigarettes

A 51-year-old businessman was arrested this morning at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) while attempting to smuggle foreign-made cigarettes valued at Rs. 3.45 million into the country.

The arrest was made by officers of the Airport Police Narcotics Bureau. The suspect, a resident of Kalmunai, had arrived at 4.40 a.m. from Kuwait City on Jazeera Airways flight J9-551.

Upon inspection, officials discovered 115 cartons containing 23,000 foreign-made "Manchester" brand cigarettes concealed in two pieces of his luggage.

The suspect was taken into custody for further investigations.
