Colombo, April 25 (Daily Mirror) -  A businessman, who was adversely affected by the country’s economic crisis, has sent letters of demand claiming Rs.50 million as damages from former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa, former CBSL Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal and the Monterey Board for mishandling the economic crisis in the country.

It has warned that legal action will be instituted against the above-mentioned individuals if the money with the interest is not paid within two weeks.

Businessman Kalinga Silva, who is engaged in producing disposable surgical items, has sent these letters of demand through Attorney-at-Law Pramod Polpitiya.

The businessman stated that due to the mishandling of the economy between 2019 and 2022, he was unable to carry out his business activities, resulting in a loss of Rs. 50 million. He further stated that the depreciation of the Sri Lankan rupee against the US Dollar, restrictions imposed on imported items, and daily power cuts were the main reasons for the loss of business activities, for which the aforementioned individuals should be held responsible.

The businessman further stated that the Supreme Court judgement in SC FR 195/2022 held that several respondents including former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa, former CBSL Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal and the Monetary Board are responsible for mishandling the economic crisis in the country and they have violated the Public Trust reposed in them.

Curious to know if ex-presidents have presidential immunity against such lawsuits?

    Vernon Thursday, 25 April 2024 11:02 PM

Should have been 50 Billion each. Then they will decide if they should be involved in politics in more !!!

    Lk Thursday, 25 April 2024 11:29 PM

This is ok but how many other business people could claim such as a compensation? If all do this how could MR and co pay all those people .:: We all know it is utter irresponsible behavior of MR and co paved the way for this economic crisis and yet how could they pay for all these people ? They may need to sell all their properties and belongings to pay all this back ?

Well done. Wish you all the best.

    Jagath Friday, 26 April 2024 03:34 AM

Rs. 50 million would be pocket money for these three mega crooks.

    Nihal S Friday, 26 April 2024 03:40 AM

Interesting to see the outcome. The supreme Court only said these guys were responsible for the economic mess, but did not give any punishment. At least they should have been bared holding positions related to economic governance in future. Sadly the Supreme court decision has no impact and this family continue to ruin the country. Good luck with the claim.

Wil Not Succeed During This Regime’s Rule Friday, 26 April 2024 04:16 AM

Won’t be accepted by the courts coz everyone suffered and is still suffering. Future generations will be suffering too. So no point challenging it as it will destroy a stable “bee hive” established over the years and all sorts of implications will arise if broken.

I live in a rich country . Due to the economic crisis many businesses bankrupt and close-down. One state's premier resigned. So can they go to court and ask compensation from the leaders? All these nonsense in SL

Rip Winkle Friday, 26 April 2024 05:17 AM

This is definitely going to be interesting to watch unravel.

    lion Friday, 26 April 2024 05:27 AM

Good development, hope similar type of court cases will fallow against these scoundrels.

Tissa Fernando Friday, 26 April 2024 05:57 AM

His business should be subject to a through audit if the case has to go through.

    Man Friday, 26 April 2024 10:48 AM

Your verdict is irrelevant as the judicial system will make a determination as you are bias and very concerned of high caliber thieves of Pandora grade.

Tissa Fernando Friday, 26 April 2024 11:18 PM

Man, the claim is itself is bullshit. The courts will throw it out . The guy is looking for publicity.

    Wow! ‘Way to go!’

    Wow! ‘Way to go!’

    Ram Friday, 26 April 2024 07:37 AM

These demand letters are sent and some followed by court actions that never run to a finish. Is this letter of demand a repeat of that process

    Jeevester Friday, 26 April 2024 07:50 AM

    Well done !!

    Labby Friday, 26 April 2024 07:59 AM

What a waste of time. That businessman was foolish to let his losses accumulate to 50 million, and now his displaying his foolishness by making demands on the most powerful family in the country. A waste of time.

    M Fernando Friday, 26 April 2024 08:13 AM

Pre-election hatchet job ! Will he include Namal as well ?

    Ravana Friday, 26 April 2024 08:16 AM

Every citizen who loves to see justice should do the same. Sue the true terror of Sri Lanka

    Adwani Friday, 26 April 2024 08:36 AM

Most certainly, you will be awarded at least something better than nothing. 7 Billion US Dollars reserve was available when Gota tookover from Sirisena in 2019.

    Sokrates Friday, 26 April 2024 09:04 AM

I've been waiting since the court ruling for a businessman to come forward with such a claim against the convicted crooks. The case has the best chance of success.

Sinnaththambi kandhan Friday, 26 April 2024 09:43 AM

    Good move, more will follow

    Roshanaly Friday, 26 April 2024 10:06 AM

How can they contest the election ,when there is already Court judgement against them.

Panduka Dasanayake Friday, 26 April 2024 02:01 PM

Good question Roshanaly. If there was a thing called conscience, all of them still in parliament should have resigned their positions, and if there be such thing as principles and honour of political parties, none of them should be on any election platform nor be given nomination. There may be strictly no legal impediment though. Shame was never part of their psyche.

No Rule Of Law Friday, 26 April 2024 06:29 PM

You seem ignorant on the way things are done in SL. Come and stay for a few weeks and see for yourself how things are run. You might shorten your stay eventually if you are from a place where rule of law is practiced and followed.

    Pin Gona 2 Friday, 26 April 2024 11:27 AM

Wow, I think this is the next Aragala

Sue Kirthisinghe Friday, 26 April 2024 12:14 PM

Does this mean, we as citizens, can also take them to court to demand compensation for the mess they have made of our lives? They certainly ruined our economy by bankrupting many businesses resulting in our losing jobs and livelihoods. How about the 6.9 million for broken promises? Maybe this is one way of getting our money back from the crooks who stole from us. Fine them or jail them.

    Danba Friday, 26 April 2024 01:49 PM

Civil rights of all those who are responsible, have to be banned so that they cannot contest any election for the sake of the one country and sane lawmaking.

Pay your taxes Friday, 26 April 2024 03:32 PM

The country is still not in a position to pay its debts. It does not earn enough. So this guy is just a showman

SL is still Bankrupt. All Fake News it’s doing OK Saturday, 27 April 2024 06:17 AM

Absolutely and your message must be widely publicised in all forums. People think all’s well coz no shortages and queues. But in reality, more than USD$60 Billion in debt and this regime talks big they manage it. Actually anyone could have done it by agreeing to the conditions of borrowing and begging from the international community.

Lankan Lover Saturday, 27 April 2024 11:40 AM

Now this is getting more interesting, A potential screen play for a movie.

මහරජානෙනි......some still sing that song because their present and future generations have been well funded by the monarchs.
