Bus conductor assaulted after defending harassed women

A conductor on a bus travelling from Nawalapitiya to Colombo was assaulted this morning by two youths who had allegedly harassed several young women, including a mother and daughter, on board.

The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. near the traffic light at the Kirillawala Expressway entrance in Kadawatha.

It was reported that the two suspects boarded the bus midway through the journey.

Although there were vacant seats at the back, they chose to sit beside young female passengers and reportedly attempted to inappropriately touch them.

The women moved to other seats, but the suspects continued to follow and harass other female passengers.

The repeated behaviour drew the attention of both passengers and the bus conductor, who intervened.

One of the suspects then allegedly brandished a knife and attempted to attack the conductor.

The altercation escalated when the bus stopped at the Kirillawala traffic light. All three exited the vehicle, and the suspects reportedly broke a wooden pole from the roadside and used it to assault the conductor.

Local residents and bus passengers then pursued the fleeing suspects, eventually nabbing them in a nearby paddy field.

The suspects were beaten, restrained and handed over to the Kadawatha Police.

The injured conductor has been hospitalised, and the bus driver has filed a formal complaint.

The two suspects are to be produced before the Mahara Magistrate tomorrow (June 8).
