Bureaucracy not aligned with Govt. - Minister

Colombo, July 4 (Daily Mirror) - A key minister admitted that bureaucracy does not fall in line with the government in the realization of its targets in an expeditious manner.

In an interview with Daily Mirror, Plantation and Community Infrastructure Minister Samantha Vidyaratna said that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake can’t move at the pace he desires, and it’s the same for him in his ministry.

“We have to constantly push to get things done," he said.

Asked about problems in the execution of major projects, he said a lot of issues could be avoided if rules and regulations were followed.

He said the government would not hesitate to take action against officials appointed by it in case of issues.

A chairman of a corporation under my Ministry has been removed, for example. There is an audit inquiry against another. We only appointed them. Still, if there are issues, we will address them,” he said.

He said, “We need changes in three aspects. We don’t tread along the traditional political path. We want to bring about change in political culture. We mould our MPs as true public representatives. Secondly, we have to transform the economic path. We cannot resort to the economic path of depending on borrowings and privatization. Instead, we want to build the agriculture, industrial sector, fisheries sector etc. We have started it now. Thirdly, we want to transform society casting aside racism and religious discrimination, and eradicating drug menace and organized crimes.”
