Colombo, February 02 (Daily Mirror) - A 24-year-old British woman reportedly died after being admitted to a hospital following a sudden illness while staying at a hostel on R.A. De Mel Mawatha, Kollupitiya.

The woman was one of three foreigners who fell ill at the hostel, with the others being a German couple.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

If many persons in hostel fall ill, obviously it is due to some poisoning. Maybe it is food poisoning, or if hostel has bar then probably mixed pure 100% alcohol with some food colouring, and sold as spirits. That trick has claimed countless lives overseas, and foreigner don't know difference between counterfeit arrack and the real thing, so foolishly drink the poison.

This has been happening in many South Asian countries lately due to drink spiking and other tampering, mostly to women, meaning also due to some sextual harassment motives. A thorough investigation must happen given three women already got sick. SL should take stern action against these malpractices given it wants to promote tourism to attract dollars.

Although I do not recommend street food, many people eat such food daily basis but very rarely someone died or became sick immediately as a result of eating such food. Howver, longterm health issues may develop as a redukt of eating such food regularly. This government's crackdown on unhygienic food outlets is excellent but follow up action is necessary.
