British State Minister for South Asia assures UK’s continuous cooperation to SL

British State Minister for South Asia, United Nations and the Commonwealth, Lord Tariq Ahmed assured that the government of the United Kingdom looks forward to working with the government of President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena to resolve economic and social issues faced by the island nation.

In a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Gunawardena today (16), he exchanged details on the issues faced by Sri Lanka.

Prime Minister Gunawardena briefed him about economic, social and political challenges and the government’s short, medium and long-term steps to solve them and bring relief to the people. Lord Ahmed assured UK’s support to the steps taken in those directions.

Hon Lord Tariqj Ahmed, you have to understand the fundamental problem in Sri Lanka since independence in 1948. It’s all nice and glory trying to work with the SL government. You know UK in spite of same language, one major religion, one culture , ethnicity, have four states to coexist. In SL, there is two languages, major two religions, two cultures, two ethnicity and two living areas. NorthEast Tamils and rest Sinhalese. Thus until and unless we sort out this basic problem, your help is just an eye wash. Help us out of this problem.

British granted independence to Sri Lanka and left without a proper basis for all communities to live peacefully, this brought the country to face two Sinhala insurrection and a LTTE up rising, today religious sectors too involved in politics,this scenario has created many problems to our nation. The difference between the Sinhala and Tamil communities have widen due to politicians, we don't see a solution to devolve powers to all communities equally.

@Justice You over look the upcountry Tamil people. While we don't share the views of the Northern Tamils, we have our own needs to alleviate poverty amongst Tea Estate workers. However, everything else Justice you make good points. I like to add English was forced upon the Irish, the Welsh, and the Scotts. It's not their native language. Sri Lanka is thriving better as multi-language nation compared to what the UK is. Anyway, I disagree that the English have any real ability to assist us. The scotts are striving for independence, and sooner or later it will happen. They may only offer multi-state solution to us, which in the upcountry seems like going backwards.

What ideas you have our social problem? There are problems, but from where you live your comfortable existence in the UK, how do see we can get freedom of expression like your country has? Extra trade with surely help the businessman, who then pay off their politician buddy/friend, and the vicious circle continues indefinitely. Or Middle East workers won't send remittances while the exchange rate is poor while pegged. If the rupee goes down against the UK pound surely better even businessman exporting, eh? More rupee for item sent abroad. Maybe you make suggestion for it?

Funny situation Lord Ahmed says that Britain will support Lanka when the so-called Pitch Black exercise in Northern Territory, Australia is bringing together some 2,500 personnel and 100 aircraft from around the globe for three weeks Including Germany, European NATO members France, Britain the Netherlands, the US, New Zealand, Korea, the UAE, India, Japan, Thailand and others. The exercises include simulating bombing Chinese Naval strategic asset Hambantota and its environs to back to pre civilisation.
