Embilipitiya, Feb 05, (Daily Mirror) - The bridge across the Hulanda Oya on the Embilipitiya-Middeniya road, originating from the Kumbugodaara area collapsed, creating a traffic standstill.
The incident, which occurred between 6:30 and 7:30 an was caused by a lorry loaded with timber.
According to local residents, water supply has also been disrupted in some areas due to the incident.
The bridge, constructed in 1985 during the tenure of late President Ranasinghe Premadasa, collapsed due to the widening of the road on both sides without proper maintenance. The widening, according to locals, left the bridge vulnerable, leading to its collapse this morning.

You can build a new jungle bridge with the tree trunks from the truck.

So where are the Army engineers. They ought to be helping get this sorted out..... at least temporarily.

What are the functions of the area Engineers/Roads Engineers? Don't they have to check the government assets on a regular basis and provide reports on maintenance needed. Everything is mismanaged in this country and the Politicians are having a whale of a time

First it was the collapse of the economy and our SC named a few who were responsible for that collapse. No action taken. Now our assets are collapsing. I hope the key politicians who have passed the retirement age too will collapse sooner than later

All buildings, roads and bridges require regular maintenance. For that, the authorities need to establish a cycle of maintenance, under strict supervision. Without these, is it any wonder they all collapse? In developed countries the maintenance teams are set up before the completion of any project.

very often one sees heavy flat bottom commercial and allied vehicles transporting huge boulders, massive tree trunks, etc., heavier than the vehicle along high ways and minor roads outside city limits and the bridges and culverts are the same age (39 years) as the one that has collapsed . It should be made mandatory for owners of such vehicles to obtain a permit from the RDA for its use depending on the permissible weight of the load and type of load and any likely damage to state property the owner held responsible and liable if the conditions of the permit are violated
