The Government of the Federative Republic of Brazil has donated 10 high-capacity Water Purification Units to assist Sri Lanka’s flood relief and recovery efforts following Cyclone Ditwah, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism said.
The ministry stated that the donation was formally handed over to Minister Vijitha Herath by the Charge d’Affaires of the Brazilian Embassy in Sri Lanka, Ms. Monica Maria Meirelles Nasser, on January 9, 2026, at the ministry’s headquarters.
Each purification unit has the capacity to treat 10,000 liters of water per day, collectively providing clean drinking water to approximately 7,000 people daily. Beyond immediate disaster relief, the technology is designed for long-term integration into public infrastructure, including schools and hospitals.
Minister Herath expressed his gratitude to Brazil for the timely support, noting that the donation reflects the strong bilateral partnership and the shared commitment of both countries to humanitarian cooperation.
