Colombo, Feb 21 (Daily Mirror) - After receiving the first batch of vehicles, the price of a brand-new Bajaj RE three-wheeler will be Rs. 1,995,000.

The David Pieris Motor Company stated that they currently do not have any brand-new vehicle stock available but are now open for bookings.

Bajaj three-wheelers have been one of the highest employment generators in Sri Lanka.

What you say is perfectly true but it's the vehicle for the good,the bad and the ugly. What other profession allows the swimming trunk as a dress code in public. Next to free education, and free health they are the lifeline.

This should be done in a systematic manner. Initially, stop importing any new ones, second stop importation of spare parts over a period of time and finally phased them all out. However, an alternate should be looked into and introduced while the Three Wheelers are taken out as many people solely depend on these for their livelihood. I recollect reading that over 1.2 million Three Wheelers are in Sri Lanka. This is a huge number.

Agree. Provide vocational training to the youth who cannot enter universities or complete A/L's and encourage them to take up alternate employment, including modernised farming. This will enhance the GDP as well.

Tuk-Tuk culture has totally destroyed the skilled labour market. It has also created a sub culture of aiding abetting vices mainly drug peddling and harassment of other road users. They have blocked areas for normal vehicle parking. What was done is done. Stop at this and no more additional tuk-tuks on the road.

Why we need more tuktuks. We have too many in the roads as well as for sale all the time. Tuktuk drivers are one of reckless drivers and thugs on the roads. We should minimise the imports and provide technical training for the younger generation than driving tuktuk.

They only keep marketing the vehicle and presenting it in Motor Fairs. I have yet to see one on the roads tht is not on a test drive.

Only talk, no show. It's one thing to build an electric vehicle (even high school kids in western countries build them for school projects because EVs are much more simpler), and it's a whole other thing to mass produce a vehicle and bring to the market. There are productive EV companies in Sri Lanka who are already mass producing and exporting smaller EVs if you look.

There are 2 points here. 1. Need to look at the alternative employment opportunities for the tuktuk drivers 2. Need to look at alternative convenient transport options for people. Even though we don't like to see so many tuktuks on the road, majority of the people use these for commuting. So removing tuktuks would create a big vacuum for which an alternative is critical. Its actually is a good business opportunity in a way

Oh Gosh. Please stop importing trishaws. Hallmark of a 3rd world country, Gang culture, pollution traffic congestion all caused by these things. Richard pieris should be taken to court over this.
