Board of inquiry appointed to probe sudden death of Sabaragamuwa University student

Colombo, May 1 (Daily Mirror) - A board of inquiry was appointed to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the sudden death of a second year student attached to the Faculty of Technology at the Sabaragamuwa University, the Ministry of Higher Education said.

The Ministry said in a statement that the university administration and the University Grants Commission (UGC) will take all necessary action soon after the report is recieved.

The Ministry said it has paid special attention to the reports shared on social media, claiming that the death has been caused due to ragging and that if it was proved so, strict action will be taken against those responsible.

It seems that the raging is being continued for sometime and this is not an exception. Action has to be taken against all in authority who have turned a blind eye. It seems the Ministry is trying to divert the attention or soft pedal the authorities as they themselves are responsible. Case should be filed for man slaughter against all involved by the police without waiting for the Green signal from Ministry. From the sly reply I get the impression that the culprits have sufficient influence to divert the matter.

This is the fault of the University Manegement. Punishment to the students is important but preventing these things happening again is more important.. learn how foreign universities are handling. They have a completely different way of welcoming new students (one need not take the opportunity to make a visit ). Academics please learn and educate students.

I am not sure why ragging is allowed to happen. If someone treats another individually in a harassing way over and over again, isn't their any laws that apply to the context, so that perpetrators could be brought to justice? If not isn't it time we make such laws - bullying, harassment and discrimination should not be tolerated with in universities or outside of them. I ssue I believe is that in Sri Lanka authorities whether they be government or private sectors use bullying as a way of managing and governing thus have no real commitment to sol e problems like ragging in universities.
