Birth certificates to carry special identification reference



The government approved the facility to issue birth certificates with an identity number.

The decision was announced at the weekly cabinet briefing held at the information department today.

The resolution was submitted by the President, as the Defence Minister to issue the birth certificate of the relevant individual.

In the future, all Sri Lankans will be given the opportunity to attend to their statutory needs easily and efficiently when obtaining services from birth to death by utilizing a unique identification reference.

The Registrar General's Department is entrusted with the authority to issue birth certificate to a child at the time of birth of any child that is born in Sri Lanka in compliance with the Births and Deaths Registration Act.

The Department is entrusted with the authority to maintain the national individual registry as well as to register and issuing of NICs to the Sri Lankan citizens as per the provisions of the registration of persons act No. 32 of 1968.

For the Sri Lankan citizens who are 15 years and over, the Department of Registration of persons is entrusted with the powers to issue Sri Lankan identity number under electronic transaction orders. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama
