Be careful when drinking tap water, Opposition MP warns

Parliament, February 6 (Daily Mirror)- Someone in the present government has earned large sums of money by importing hydrated lime with high content of chromium, Opposition MP D.V. Chanaka told Parliament.

"Some 550 metric tons of hydrated lime has come into Sri Lanka and these have been sent to the Galle, Ambatale and Ratmalana water purification plants. Hydrated lime is used by these plants to purify tap water.

"The tap water in Sri Lanka currently has a high content of Chromium which can give rise to cancer, kidney disease and liver disease. Therefore, watchout when drinking tap water," MP Chanka said.

"I will look into the matter and make a statement in the House within the course of the day," Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe responded.

People should talk about things they know. WHO daily requirement of Chromium per day is around 10mcg daily for a 10 year old and a bit higher for adults. The Chromium content if any in the hydraulic lime, will never introduce even a closer amount of Chromium into tap water. Take note that Chlorine is also a chemical added to purify water. CL evaporates very fast after the water has been drawn from the supply. Fluoride is also added to water supply in North America, but it's value is being under debate. DO NOT worry. Filter and boil the water and drink as much as you can. DM should research the material they publish before creating chaos.

It is really sad that the Medical doctors sitting in the assembly did not respond to this false alarm. Especially the young doctor from Jaffna who is complaining about his traffic violations. Sad that our medical doctors have no basic knowledge about human health. GMOA please respond
