Batticaloa medical doctor arrested for selling psychoactive drugs to youth

Colombo, June 16 (Daily Mirror) - A medical doctor who was running a dispensary in the Kiran area of Batticaloa was arrested for allegedly selling psychoactive drugs to youths.

The Batticaloa Regional Food and Drugs Inspectors along with Police STF personnel conducted a joint raid in the Kiran area and made the arrest on a tip off.

The dispensary's MBBS qualified doctor was arrested for issuing PREGAB 150mg to young men without a prescription.

He was produced before the Valachchenai Courts and the case is proceeding.

He is a doctor. He can give drugs without a prescription from someone else. There is no basis for arresting him for selling a drug without a prescription. If he has given drugs to someone without a definitive indication then that has to be investigated, but that is a different matter

Selling psychoactive drugs to youngsters sounds more like a drug peddler than a professional medical practitioner! “Do no harm”is part of the medical code of conduct! He should be struck off the medical registrar and jailed without bail.

false accusation and doctor realsed by the courts of law on the next day. first of all FND and STF DON'T have a right to search doctor. This should be done by a qualified doctor who work as MOH

If he's a doctor, why can't he issue drugs without a prescription?? That's a funny thing to say! All doctors issue medication at their dispensaries without a prescription. A prescription is needed only to buy medicines from pharmacies. The problem here is NOT issuing drugs without a prescription. The problem is "What is the drug he issued"?? Again, if he's a doctor, he will surely have an explanation as to why it was issued.
