Colomo, May 8 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) founder Basil Rajapaksa reasserted yesterday that his party still believes the general election should precede the presidential elections but President Ranil Wickremesinghe has a contrasting stand, according to an informed source of the party.

Mr. Rajapaksa addressed the parliamentary group of the party and spelled out his opinion in this regard. Earlier, he met with the President and held talks about the latest political developments.

According to the SLPP, a fair number of its MPs stand for the conduct of the snap general election ahead of the presidential elections scheduled for October, this year in terms of the Constitution. The next parliamentary election is scheduled for 2025 only. However, the President has the constitutional authority to dissolve Parliament prematurely and declare a snap election.

Mr. Rajapaksa is reported to have instructed the MPs to brace for any election no matter what. The MPs were reportedly asked to start political work in preparation for any election that might come first.

Meanwhile, SLPP MPs who hold ministerial responsibilities in the government stand for the presidential elections to be conducted first. Earlier, Mr. Rajapaksa told the media that he would not leave room for any rift with the President over his stand.

Nevertheless UNP has not started to recapture power at district level.Ranil will be more interested look after the interests of UNP than Pohuttuwa. For him Pohuttuwa is only a crow's nest

Definitely Up to Something Fishy Wednesday, 08 May 2024 10:10 AM

These guys are capable and up to something big. We ALL saw how they tried to remove Ranil previously whilst he was a PM. With money, anything is possible. The security forces are definitely gonna to support these guys as they are always loyal to them. It can be seen at every protest how the protesters are dispersed! So be prepared something like a Mynmar style regime might evolve and only people who are supportive will benefit!

Why on earth this man allowed to meddle in our politics when he is a dual citizen. If they win the general election Ranil can say good bye

    Jude Wednesday, 08 May 2024 06:52 AM

This uneducated low class low-level lowlife Basil fooling scores of politicians in SL. If you're allowing Basil to dictate terms you can imagine The mentality of majority of politicians! HUH.

    Senaka Wednesday, 08 May 2024 06:55 AM

Basil and the Rajapakse's are non-entities now. They no longer have the moral authority to call shots. As a family they ruined the country placing material gain and greed for power above all. They, their families, and lackey's were the beneficiaries that created a new line of mega rich individuals. Now when their doom is imminent many of those beneficiaries are moving on from their sordid relationship with the nation wrecking family.

Basil's IQ level is minus, yeah it's negative, theoretically possible and Basil is the living proof.

    CJ Wednesday, 08 May 2024 07:11 AM

Basil seems to insists on a General Election hoping a single party wouldn't get a majority and then a coalition would govern the country. A coalition of UNP, SJB, NPP, SLFP and SLPP will never work. Thereafter, in a couple of years people will insist on elections again forgetting the debacle in 2019 and vote for a single party majority. SLPP needs time and people to forget. This is my opinion. I could be wrong !

    Wera Wednesday, 08 May 2024 07:16 AM

Grade Eight pass genius and foreign citizen what right do you have to dictate which election happens first. Go back to your home and shut up.

    Pusa Wednesday, 08 May 2024 07:20 AM

Have both of them on the same day!

    Nimal Wednesday, 08 May 2024 07:45 AM

Why split hairs on this mundane matter? The results of whatever election that would be held is very clear. If general elections are held first, the NPP will emerge a clear winner, though it will not be able to secure a clear majority in parliament. If the presidential elections are held first, the NPP will emerge victorious and the general elections that would follow, the NPP will secure a landslide victors as never before seen in any election of Sri Lanka. After letting his stalwarts enjoy a luxurious lifestyle while continuing their massive frauds and devising new ones, the pin president is sadly mistaken if he thinks that he can make a massive turnaround in the votes by giving 20 kilos of rice, pretending that he will increase the daily wage of estate labourers to Rs 1,700/= and dishing out deeds for people who now occupy government lands on permits.

    Sambo Wednesday, 08 May 2024 07:50 AM

Who is Basil to request for General Elections first. He is the main cause for a bankrupt Sri Lanka but keeps appearing like a ghost poking his fingers.

WE THE PEOPLE NEED A CHANGE OF GOVERNMENT Wednesday, 08 May 2024 08:07 AM

FORGET ABOUT GENERAL ELECTIONS, YOU, MEMBERS OF YOUR FAMILY AND STOOGES HAVE FEATHERED YOUR OWN DASH NESTS, ENGING UP IN THE COUNTRY IN A DEEP SINK HOLE. TIME FOR YOU LOT TO BE WIPED OFF THE FACE OF POLITICS INCLUDING YOUR SCAPEGOAT.

I am sure this man will be in his motherland USA during the election. He should be made aware that there is a extradition treaty between the two countries.

    Steve Wednesday, 08 May 2024 08:24 AM

Which ever comes first makes no difference. The result will be the same.

    Christo255 Wednesday, 08 May 2024 08:27 AM

Just shows the immaturity of the SLPP parliamentarians to listen to a loud mouthed idiot. Basil is the worst thing for Sri Lanka. Please declare the rogue persona non grata

Prof. D. Udaya Meeripanne Wednesday, 08 May 2024 08:32 AM

Who is Basil? He and his brothers Mahinda and Gota ruined our country and again trying to loot going for elections. SLPP should be scrapped off with the Presidential and General Elections, this is the verdict of the public.

    Dr. H.D. Amaratunga Wednesday, 08 May 2024 08:34 AM

Only President Ranil Wickramasinghe can take a decision what election to be kept first and he had already declared that in October 2024 the Presidential Election will take place. No. change needed Basil anyway you guys are already dead.

Bannis Mama Wednesday, 08 May 2024 08:36 AM

Kaputa Basil or any SLPP nutty fellows cannot decide on elections. It is left to Hon. President and the Elections Commission.

    Boru Na .... Atha .... Atha ...... (100% truth) Wednesday, 08 May 2024 08:38 AM

Lion Samarawickrame - Snr. Journalist Wednesday, 08 May 2024 08:40 AM

Mr. Basil Rajapakshe it is not a easy task to play with Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe as you think. He is good for good but bad for bad also. Nevertheless, he will be our next President.

    CitizenP Wednesday, 08 May 2024 08:50 AM

Bazil is an American citizen.... why he is involving Srilankan elections.

    Terrence K Wednesday, 08 May 2024 08:51 AM

Basil you may think that you have 7 brains but the one brain President will outclass you. Ulterior motives to have the parliamentary elections before the Presidential election will result in the President continuing to be dependent on the Pottu party if by "Kana" chance your party wins the parliamentary elections which will give you the upperhand to field a candidate of your choice for the Presidential election to follow. Being in politics for the last number of decades the President will use his magic wand to pull out the aces at the correct time. Wait and see!!!!!!!!!

Kamal Bolawansa Wednesday, 08 May 2024 09:21 AM

IO Potuwa ..... IO Basil, Gota and Mahinda ..... IO Namal baby.... now you fellows should fold your mats and get ready to go somewhere now itself. After the elections people will look for you guys to show their strength with anger as you all played out our money and leading a luxury life.

    Guppi Wednesday, 08 May 2024 09:29 AM

    jabilo Wednesday, 08 May 2024 09:43 AM

Asking for what actually country doesn't need at the moment. Always cannot sort out priorities correctly. No idea about the importance of investing capital for good returns. It is up to the people to identify these selfserving thieves in all colors and treat them with what they desreve. Presidency is the most important and parliament comes always second which can give fullest support to the president elected first, in a country badly need economic revival.

    FredSnR Wednesday, 08 May 2024 09:52 AM

Have elections soon.Find some young people you can elect as leaders. The world has changed The older lot, they have no gas left in the tank now, so they are politicking, what else do you expect them they do? But everyone has the right to contest and have a chance of winning, that's democracy. We are not trying to run the US or India here, this is SrI Lanka where elephants starve in the jungle and people in their homes Ranil has done his job stabilizing the country but now it is election time, so many parties just talking to each other to decide who will bat first without going out there and batting.Where is Chamari Athapattu?

    Gaff Wednesday, 08 May 2024 10:15 AM

If the leadership is wiped off from the current pohottuwa There want be no more disaster to our mother land and will be a clean politic towards better future

Seelawathie Palangedara Wednesday, 08 May 2024 05:08 PM

Kaputa is back again to increase his share from 10% to 30%. Challenge your unelected, refused saviour and your Gobba brother with Hampada Myna!! You must bring a no confidence motion at parliament to sack this man!! All will vote and people will make Kiri Bath!!

    Buddhist Wednesday, 08 May 2024 06:45 PM

The state of Pohottuwa (SLPP) is very sad. Most SLPP MPs oppose foreign takeover or influence in SL. However, without shame, these guys fall at the feet of an American Basil and follow his orders.

    Rishan Wednesday, 08 May 2024 09:01 PM

We have an Executive President. So let him decide as per the constitution. Why should president listen to Basil? What's the power he has ? No Rajapaksha power exists....

    A Pohottu Supporter Wednesday, 08 May 2024 10:04 PM

Well done Basil. You guys won the 2005 Election by bribing Prabhakaran. You won the 2010 Election partly because of winning the war and partly because you rigged the Election after arresting your opponent. You won the 2019 Election thanks to the Easter Attack In 2019. You are trying to win once again by unfair means.

    Kevin Thursday, 09 May 2024 03:33 AM

Basil is not a Sri Lankan voter or MP. He is an American citizen. What right he has to meddle in Sri Lankan elections?
