amu - According to results announced by the United Nations on Tuesday, Rahman received 99 votes, defeating Cyprus’s Andreas S. Kakouris, who secured 91 votes.
A total of 190 ballots were cast, with no abstentions recorded.
Rahman will succeed Germany’s Annalena Baerbock, who was elected to lead the General Assembly’s 80th session.
The election was conducted by secret ballot at UN headquarters in New York.
The president of the General Assembly presides over meetings of the 193-member body and plays a key role in guiding discussions on major international issues, although the position does not carry executive authority within the United Nations.
Rahman’s one-year term will begin with the opening of the General Assembly’s 81st session in September 2026.
