BASL calls for urgent appointment of RTI Commission head

Colombo, June 2 (Daily Mirror)- The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has formally raised concerns over the ongoing vacancy of the position of Chairperson of the Right to Information (RTI) Commission, emphasising the critical nature of this role for the functioning of the Commission and the upholding of citizens’ rights.

In a letter addressed to the Constitutional Council, the BASL highlighted that since the resignation of Retired Supreme Court Judge Upali Abeyratne on March 9, 2025, no appointment has been made to fill the post. The Chairperson’s role, as outlined in the Right to Information Act No. 12 of 2016, is pivotal to the Commission’s effective operation and its mandate to safeguard the public’s right to access information.

“The absence of a chairperson hampers the Commission’s ability to operate efficiently and discharge its duties,” the BASL letter stated, underlining the national significance of ensuring a fully functioning RTI Commission.

The BASL has urged the Constitutional Council to take immediate action by recommending a suitable candidate for appointment by the President of the Republic. The Association stressed that a prompt appointment would underscore the government’s commitment to transparency and ensure the continued protection of the fundamental right to information for all Sri Lankan citizens.

The BASL’s letter was signed by its President Rajeev Amarasuriya and Secretary Chathura Galhena.
