BASL calls for inclusion of Law in school curriculum

Colombo, August 21 (Daily Mirror) - The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has urged the Government to incorporate the subject of Law into the national school curriculum, highlighting its importance as a foundation for civic consciousness and democratic values.

In a letter addressed to Prime Minister and Education Minister Harini Amarasuriya, the BASL emphasised the need and justification to introduce Law or a related subject as a compulsory component at the primary level and as an elective subject at the G.C.E. Advanced Level.

The BASL welcomed the Ministry of Education’s initiative to launch wide-ranging reforms in the education sector, noting that legal education at the school level would significantly contribute to shaping responsible and informed citizens.

“Many countries have already introduced Law into their school curricula, recognising it as a fundamental building block of civic engagement and democratic participation,” the BASL pointed out.

The BASL also expressed its readiness to extend its full support to the Ministry of Education and other relevant state institutions in designing and reviewing the curriculum, ensuring that it maintains academic rigor while being aligned with Sri Lanka’s legal and cultural context.

The BASL’s letter was signed by its President Rajeev Amarasuriya and Secretary Chathura Galhena.
