Colombo, January 29 (Daily Mirror) - The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) said it will introduce new software to detect and prevent the use of mobile phones that do not have TRC approval.

The Commission also requests the public not to purchase any mobile phones without approval from the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission in the future.

Director General of the Commission Bandula Herath said the TRC will implement a new automated system soon to prevent the use of such unapproved phones.

Absolute nonsense. It's all corruption. As I've mentioned here before, it would be much more beneficial for the country if the TRC cracks down on the unethical business practices of service providers instead of inconveniencing the people.

Just allow all new phones a 90 grace period before it gets deactivated. That way foreigners can complete their tour without a problem. 90% leave after 30 days

This Law was enacted in October1997 by which the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission was established. This is a welcome move and appreciate the TRCSL implementing it even after a tremendous gap of 29 Years. It is in another way deprive the Customs officers bribe demanding / accepting right.

Its administration is plagued by inefficiency, a lack of customer-centric practices, and excessive bureaucratic red tape. In today’s world, mobile phones are no longer luxury items but essential consumer commodities. Given this reality, the TRCSL should adopt a more user-friendly approach in delivering its services, ensuring that it does not impose overly harsh penalties on consumers. A shift toward a more consumer-oriented and efficient system is urgently needed.

Are you expeecting a Regulatory Body to ignore Law and allow the Smugglers and corrupted Customs officers to make money for them? Remember the TRCSL is in existence for the last 29 years. But all the previous Governments and Presidents including DG's of TRCSL had no back bone to impose a ban on illegal inflow of Mobile Phones due to obvious reasons. You please understand present Govt's approach and try to get yourself rehabilitate on your accord. Put the Country 1st before personal interests.

Considering how corrupt and so poorly almost every government organisation is being managed in Sri Lanka, I am not surprised. Looks like the TRCSL has lifted it's mark of inefficiency to another level. So sad that all these tax payer funded government enterprises, eventually victimise the tax payer itself. What a country ?

Good move Sadly TRC Don have the capacity to monitor and block illegal non IMEI phones. Now there are talking about to bring an app to detect such phones. It's not 100 % possible even within 2 years time.

What a farce! Are millions of tourists now expected to purchase new phones registered with the TRC? What exactly is the government trying to prove? Instead of enforcing such irrational policies, they should require phone sellers to register devices at the point of sale. This government has turned parliament into a circus, with every decision seemingly designed to suppress the common people—so much for their promises. It's time for them to step down and call for fresh general elections. If they do, they won’t even secure their usual three seats in parliament.

You do all this, but cannot introduce Mobile Number Portability service in the country. We are the only South Asian country without this service with exception of a few others that have internal political issues. I cannot change my provider without having to change the mobile number registered with Banks, Investment Banks, ecommerce accounts and so much more. Finish what you have started already. Since 2010 you have been looking into it and still nothing.
