Colombo, October 22 (Daily Mirror) - The Department of National Museums has been criticized in a recent audit for printing tickets in bulk without considering actual demand, resulting in uneconomical spending.
The audit revealed that ticket books were printed in batches ranging from 500 to 2,000 tickets, regardless of the average annual requirements of other museums over the three-year period from 2022 to 2024.
According to the audit, Rs. 1,698,148 was spent printing just 100 tickets in 2022, while Rs. 2,576,061 was spent on 3,500 tickets in 2023, bringing the total to Rs. 4,274,259. The report described such expenditure as uneconomical.
The audit revealed that that the bulk printing was intended to meet an expected rise in visitors following the post-COVID tourism revival and that significant progress in visitor numbers has already been observed in 2024 and 2025.
When Daily Mirror contacted the Department of National Museums, an official said that the pre-printed stock will be used without further printing.
The audit recommended that the department implement a modern, technology-based ticketing system to improve efficiency and avoid unnecessary costs.
