At least 41 people have died in a migrant shipwreck off Italy's Lampedusa island.

Ansa, a local news agency, reported that four people who survived the shipwreck told rescuers they were on a boat that had set off from Sfax in Tunisia that sank on its way to Italy's shores.

Lampedusa is Italy's southernmost island. It has become a key European entry point for migrants, mainly originating from Libya, since the early 2000s. (the national news)
