Colombo, March 1 (Daily Mirror) - The process of selecting a successor to Iran’s Supreme Leader rests solely with the country’s powerful constitutional body known as the Assembly of Experts, according to Iran’s Constitution.
The 88-member clerical council is constitutionally mandated to appoint a new Supreme Leader in the event of a vacancy. The same body was responsible for selecting Iran’s current Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, following the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989.
Under constitutional provisions, the Assembly of Experts is required to convene and appoint a new Supreme Leader without delay once the position becomes vacant.
