Colombo, Jan. 19 (Daily Mirror) - Former Speaker Asoka Ranwala seems to be dogged by misfortune with him being involved in a road accident injuring four persons last month and his wife meeting with another accident last Friday injuring herself.
In December 2025, Ashoka Ranwala was involved in a multi-vehicle accident in Sapugaskanda near the Denimulla Junction. While driving a jeep, Ranwala reportedly collided with a motorcycle and subsequently struck an oncoming car. Ranwala himself was injured along with a 25-year-old woman, her six-month-old infant, and her 55-year-old mother, who were travelling in the car, sustained injuries.
The second accident occurred around 6:30 a.m. on January 16 in the Biyagama area. The doctor, wife of Asoka Ranwala, was reportedly entering the Kelaniya-Biyagama highway when a car, coming from Kelaniya, collided with hers. She was receiving treatment at Colombo National Hospital.
Police said that the suspected driver, who had attended a music event at a leading Colombo hotel and was on his way to drop off a friend, tested positive for alleged alcohol consumption.
The 37-year-old lead guitarist of a well-known music group was remanded until January 20 by acting Magistrate Saman Withanarachchi.
Further investigations are underway under the supervision of Biyagama Police OIC Chief Inspector Ajith Wijesinghe.
Following the last month's incident, Ranwala was arrested on charges of reckless driving and failure to prevent an accident, though he was later released on a cash bail of Rs. 200,000.
