Around 50% diesel, 15% petrol vehicles fail emission tests in Athurugiriya

Colombo, June 5 (Daily Mirror) - A special roadside smoke emission test conducted today in front of the Athurugiriya Police Station revealed that more than 50% of diesel vehicles and 15% of petrol vehicles on the road were emitting excessive smoke, the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) said.

They said random inspections were jointly carried out by the Vehicle Emissions Trust Fund and the Sri Lanka Police Department as part of a nationwide initiative to mark World Environment Day.

According to the DMT, similar smoke tests were held at several key locations around the country, targeting vehicles contributing to air pollution and environmental degradation.

During today’s operation in Athurugiriya, maintenance orders were issued to owners of vehicles found to be emitting smoke beyond permissible limits.

Officials said these initiatives aim to address the growing health, environmental and economic issues caused by vehicle exhaust fumes, which have become a significant concern in urban and suburban areas.

The Vehicle Emissions Trust Fund announced plans to continue random vehicle smoke tests islandwide in the coming weeks, in an effort to promote cleaner, safer air and enforce emission control regulations more effectively.

Motorists are urged to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and compliant with emission standards to avoid penalties and contribute to a cleaner environment.
