Army intelligence leads to major drug and wallapatta seizures



Colombo, Nov 9. (Daily Mirror) - Swift action based on intelligence received by the Army Intelligence Unit led to the arrest of several suspects involved in illegal drug trafficking and the possession of wallapatta (Gyrinops walla) during two separate joint operations conducted, the Army said. 

On 8 November 2025, following a tip-off from the Army Intelligence Unit, officers from the Colombo Organized Crimes Division carried out a joint raid in the Mitiyagoda, Godagama area. The operation resulted in the arrest of six suspects in possession of 5 kilograms and 420 grams of heroin, valued at approximately Rs. 75 million. Authorities also seized Rs. 10,811,500 in cash, suspected to have been earned through drug trafficking. Further investigations and legal proceedings are being conducted by the Galle District Police Anti-Narcotics Unit.

Meanwhile, another joint operation was launched in the Kotapola area of Matara, based on information received by the Army Intelligence Unit. The operation, conducted in coordination with Deniyaya Wildlife Officers, led to the arrest of three residents of Deniyaya who were found in possession of 110 kilograms and 450 grams of wallapatta, valued at over Rs. 662 million.
