Colombo, Feb 20 (Daily Mirror) - In the wake of the shooting incident in the Hulfsdorp Court complex, Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara said today that steps will be taken to deploy armed guards inside the courts when special accused are produced before courts.

He told Parliament that armed security personnel are not allowed inside courts now.

The Minister said steps will be taken to deploy armed guards inside courts in special circumstances when special prisoners were produced before courts, following a discussion with the Judicial Services Commission, police and the Prisons Department.

There is no pint having armed guards when special accused are produced in court. Check all those who enter court premises and recheck those who enter the court room including the lawyers. Also check he IDs of lawyers who are not familiar to the Policemen who guard the gates

Checking everybody coming in to the court premises is a waste of everbody's time and an inconvenience. These "special accused" must be connected to the court proceedings via video technology. That will save the cost of security detail too.

The entire legal system needs some drastic changes. It is absurd that accused are brought to court every time the case is called. Also there should not be any need for all suspect to be in court. Only when the accused or witness s to be questioned, it could be done through a platform like Zoom. Also the legal process needs to be shortened drastically. As of now justice delayed is justice denied, after large sums of money is spent to maintain the legal system. Execution of death sentence should definitely be introduced. If not the entire society have to spend and bear the costly legal system. Mostly only lawyers are benefited from this system. So wil they change it?
