The appreciation of the rupee against the US Dollar was an artificial situation that has been created with a political agenda, former JVP MP Sunil Handunnetti said today.
He told a news conference that the myth that the rupee has appreciated was not made towards the strengthening of the economy but with a political motive.
"The myth that the rupee has appreciated is being spread so as to decide whether to hold the election or not, manage possible people's uproar in the future and to hoodwink the people," he said.
He said the Central Bank was not independent at present in decision making and said it was not taking decisions thinking about the whole economy but to fulfil the agenda of the government.
Handunnetti said there was a move to create a myth that the Dollar crisis was being addressed and the country would be developed now and there was no need to change the government. (Ajith Siriwardana)

He does not have to be an economist for that statement. It is very simple. As the SL in not tradable anywhere on the planet, the Rupee can not go up or down against any currency. No market means no price.The price is made up by the government.

It is not an artificial situation . Due to demand and supply of the dollar this Rupee appreciation occurred. It might fluctuate again due to market forces. If you believe market bssed economics, you won't talk like this.

Not really. Many of the NPP members are not JVP. JVP has merged with independent professionals and formed NPP. JVP is pretty much the face and the marketing campaigner for the NPP.

Rupee depreciated by 190 rupees and appreciated by 30 rupees. Net depreciation is 160 rupees. Remember Nandalal is doing what Cabraal did.

It's true that the banks are concurring with the appreciation of the rupee and giving less rupees for the Dollar Pond and Indian rupee. This is because the IMF facility signalled the acceptability of the rupee. But watch out one wrong move politically will put everything in reverse gear
