Colombo, August 24 (Daily Mirror) - Minister and Cabinet Spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa dismissed concerns over a YouTuber’s prediction about the arrest of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, saying that “anyone can make predictions” and such remarks do not imply government interference.
He stressed that the government has not interfered in any ongoing court proceedings and that all institutions have been given the space to conduct investigations independently.
“The government’s responsibility is only to provide the necessary facilities to relevant institutions. Whether it is financial fraud, crime, or corruption, investigations are carried out freely without interference. This case too shows that the law applies equally to everyone, regardless of status,” Jayatissa said.
He further pointed out that similar predictions had been made before, citing journalist Victor Ivan, who had also commented on a court decision in advance.
“Depending on how some cases proceed, anyone can make predictions. Some may think bail will be granted, some may think it won’t. These are guesses – sometimes right, sometimes wrong. But if anyone suggests such predictions are influenced, that amounts to contempt of court,” he added.
