Anuradhapura-Mihintale railway line reconstruction begins

The work to restore the railway line from Anuradhapura to Mihintale, which has been in a dilapidated condition for some time, was started on Saturday (12), under the patronage of Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Bandula Gunawardena.

The railway line, with a distance of 12 kilometres from Anuradhapura to the Mihintale railway station will be renovated as part of a long-term mega development programme.

It has been planned to establish an export processing zone in Mihintale, where the goods produced in the Northern, Central and Eastern provinces will be collected and prepared for export.

As the first step, the reconstruction of this railway line started on Saturday, at the Anuradhapura, Mihintale Junction railway station.

With the establishment of the Mihintale export zone, the goods produced in the North, North Central and Eastern provinces will be collected at a warehouse complex in Mihintale and after value addition, will be brought to the Colombo Port by train and the imported goods will be brought to Mihintale by rail and distributed within the three provinces.

Through this, the traffic congestion caused by daily running of containers along the highways can be reduced, Gunawardena pointed out.
