Anura ready for public debate with Sajith on economic policies: Handunnetti

Colombo, April 2 (Daily Mirror)- The National People's Power (NPP) today invited Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa for a public debate on economic policies with NPP leader and presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

NPP politburo member Sunil Handunnetti told a news conference that the NPP was ready to take up SJB MPs Nalin Bandara and Dr. Harsha De Silva‘s challenge to the NPP Economic Council for a public debate on economic policies and requested them to convey it in writing.

He said it was a good move to have a debate on economic policies of the presidential candidates ahead of the polls so that people can know their policies, adding that Anura Kumara Dissanayake was ready for a debate with SJB leader Sajith Premadasa.

"They are contesting the upcoming Presidential election. It is important for the people to know the policies of the Presidential candidates first-hand with some accountability. It is pointless debating with Kabir Hashim, Dr. Harsha De Silva and Eran Wickramaratne as they constantly change their policies. They acted as economic advisors to Ranil Wickremesinghe earlier and now they are with Sajith Premadasa. They may be with Ranil Wickremesinghe at the time of the Presidential election," he said.

Hadunnetti requested the Samagi Jana Balawegaya to inform in writing if Sajith Premadasa was not willing and unable to do it and added that they could then decide how and with whom it should be done.

"Let’s arrange a date, time and television channel for the debate. Our proposal is to have the debate between Sajith Premadasa and Anura Kumara Dissanayake," Handunnetti said.

It's the bottom line as they are not ready to have an argument concerning analytical economic matters as their ignorance will get exposed. If the Presidential election is announced, their group of experts in economics must face the trio of the SJB as the leader cannot do everything and avoid skipping it as they are skeptical in every sense.

I totally agree with Maqs comment none in the NPP can match anyone from this trios. I haven't come across or heard anything tangible about their economic policy so far. All long the policy they follow is rejection highlighting their views only good for them. now they say they will go with the IMF then about Indian expansionism things rejected and now change of mind for political expediency but still sticking by the outdated and worlds' forgotten socialist economy and Marxism.

I welcome this move..why? First of all; it will give us some knowledge about each one of them ...we know both of them and yet their debating skills ; talents and knowledge in politics..how do they respond and how do their tackle each other...it will be an intellectual exercise for them and educational for public . Publics have every right to know about them and about thier policies.. A huge between them in term of debating skills and knowledge.. Sajith although is an opposition leader; his debating skills are not exposed to public in TV shows that much ad AKD .. This is a good precedent to all next generations..

Anura should be protected as no one aspiring to be the next president of this cant come closer to him. He has shown his skill in oratory and behavior in the parliament. He beats any one in the politics when explaining any issue that face this country.His explanation is logical and simple and any one could understand. Finally his conduct as the minister of agriculture and animal husbandry was corrupt free and exemplary.As Dayan Jayathilaka said recently that he should be given a chance to rule this country this time.

@ LK; They can't walk the talk with tangible action. As the minister of Agriculture from 2003 to 2005, with Chandrika, done nothing to highlight like the health policy late Professor Senaka Bibile. Under My3's rule, no action taken to take in custody any of the thieves as alleged by them even as the chief of the committee appointed by then president. The gauge is to identify the difference of action by being in the opposition and none with the authority that AKD had. But, he can speak well with rhetoric speech and can avoid critical questions. That is his ambition as a whole.
