Animal-friendly tourism: Sigiriya stray dogs sterilised, vaccinated

Colombo, Feb 20 (Daily Mirror) - The Association of Veterinarians for Humane Management of Animal Population claims that most stray dogs in the Sigiriya tourism area have been sterilised and vaccinated to create a safer, healthier environment for both the animals and visitors who cherish this beautiful destination.

Association Chairman Dr. Chamith Nanayakkara said that the programme was launched with the goal of promoting animal-friendly tourism in the country.

"Rabies vaccines are provided to all stray animals in the area. This programme was initiated in 2016. There is often a misconception that stray dogs are a hindrance to foreign tourists, but our experience in the field tells a different story. Many travellers show the same compassion toward animals as we do, often stopping to feed, pet or even rescue them," Dr. Nanayakkara said.

Stray dogs are not just part of the streets; they become part of the journey. It’s time to shift the narrative and embrace kindness.

The programme has been organised over the past ten years by Adopt a Dog in Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Sigiriya Project, Central Cultural Fund and Vets for Future as the veterinary partner.
