Colombo, April 7 (Daily Mirror) - The Meteorology Department has issued an Amber-level advisory warning of severe lightning activity in parts of the country, effective until 11.00 p.m. today (07).
According to the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre, thundershowers accompanied by intense lightning are likely to occur after 2.00 p.m. in the Sabaragamuwa Province and Central Province, as well as in the districts of Kurunegala District, Anuradhapura District, Mannar District, Vavuniya District and Mullaitivu District.
The advisory also notes the possibility of temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers.
Authorities have urged the public to take precautionary measures to minimize potential damage and ensure personal safety. People are advised to seek shelter indoors and avoid standing under trees or in open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and water bodies during thunderstorms.
The public is further cautioned against using wired telephones and electrical appliances, and to avoid open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats during lightning activity. Residents are also warned to be vigilant of fallen trees and power lines.
The Amber advisory indicates a moderate level of threat, with residents advised to remain prepared and alert. Emergency assistance can be sought through local disaster management authorities.
