Colombo, July 28 (Daily Mirror) - The National Movement for Consumer Rights Protection (NCMRP) requested the Chairman of the Coconut Development Board (CDB) to allow only bottled and labeled coconut oil to be sold in the market, in order to prevent the ongoing racket of selling adulterated coconut oil, which is harmful to health.
NCMRP Chairman Ranjith Vithanage, in a letter to the CDB Chairman, pointed out that this racket has been continuing unchecked for a long time and that his organisation has made repeated representations to successive governments, but with no effective response.
He said that the use of adulterated coconut oil has led to cancer, and health authorities have acknowledged the associated health risks.
“We highly appreciate the Cabinet decision to regulate the coconut oil trade and to allow only bottled and labeled coconut oil in the market to prevent this racket. The step taken by the government in response to this urgent issue is most welcome,” the letter said.
However, Vithanage noted that several coconut oil mill owners responsible for the racket have opposed the implementation of the proposal.
“I would like to point out that their opposition does not reflect the opinion of the public,” he added.
He further urged the CDB Chairman to expedite the implementation of the Cabinet decision.
