A picture of Foreign Minister Ali Sabry with his son at an event on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly has sparked criticism with people questioning as to why such privileges are offered to the relatives of politicians.

The picture posted on X formerly known as Twitter is doing the rounds on social media with public questioning as to why Sabry's son is part of the official delegation that has travelled to the UN in New York.

Earlier, the government was taken to task by curious citizens as to why five non-ministerial MPs from the ruling party and the opposition were included in the presidential entourage headed to the UN in New York.

Nepotism, cutting across the political divide, is rampant in Sri Lanka. It has become customary, if not expected, for the leaders to give such joy rides to their close aides.   Currently, even key diplomatic postings are held by non-career diplomats or politicians' children denying the chance for the gifted Sri Lankans to scale up the ladder.

Surely you have a good answer to the critics. All you jokers are only for your own betterment.

    Siva Friday, 22 September 2023 02:51 PM

Nepotism everywhere in country and Colombo university

Wonders of Asia. Tax prayers cry while the public servants and their relatives lavishly spend with our tax. Very pathetic. Can we proud to be Sri Lankans?

    Mahila Friday, 22 September 2023 10:10 PM

"Can we proud to be Sri Lankans?" Why not!!!??? Sri Lanka is the UNIQUE country in the UNIVERSE - where the People-at-Large become 'SERVANTS' of so-called "HONORARY SERVANTS", and at their sole MERCY!!?? What for the Telling!?

Country is in critical situation but all government MPs used to enjoy with tax payer's money, Good Luck Sri Lanka

Dimitri Zivago friend of a school teacher in Sri Lanka Friday, 22 September 2023 02:56 PM

Aiyo. All people have feet of clay when it comes to money, and none are so corrupt as those who fall prey to greed. So sad. Just ruined his career as a free thinker, ie savings the girls from enforced matrimony and the pattern follows, no qualms about being a reprehensible, he knows what everyone will say.

Sam Silva Friday, 22 September 2023 05:39 PM

All we do is complaining without any choices. Very pathetic.

    Ram Friday, 22 September 2023 09:08 PM

Who cares for the public servants authorities. As long as they get their salary from public tax money they will be ok with it.

Suppose there there is no basis? Friday, 22 September 2023 05:44 PM

Ali Sabry has a son studying in the USA, I was told. If this is the son, then the question of getting a joy ride mentioned in the tail end of the news and resultant comments do not apply. All comments and criticism vindicated. Will there be an apology from the news room and comments?

    Mahila Friday, 22 September 2023 10:25 PM

Whether, he was studying in the Timbuktu, in Mali. New York, US or in UNO is irrelevant to the Query!? The ISSUE ISN'T where he was!!?? But the PROCESS!? Please Sri Lankans, as usual matter is DEFLECTED!!??

    Wiraj Friday, 22 September 2023 05:47 PM

No doubt a readymade answer will be given stating that he has travelled with his own money! Gullible people of Sri Lanka, we deserve to suffer more.

It is very strange that IMF did not give any ruling on this ministerial privileges at the time of the loan.

At least people should be happy because Ali Sabri didn't take his domestic servants and pets with him to the event. This is a food for thought to our intelligent voters.

This country is heading for disaster..

Ali Sabri is a Jarapaksa family apparatchik. He is no better than his master Basil Jarapaksa.

Actually nepotism is against the teachings of Islam and as a Muslim minister, Ali Shabri should have avoided such an emarrassing situation....His son has nothing to do with the UN session. Unfortunately nepotism has become a norm in almost all of the eastern countries. Change of attitude and system is necessary to wipe out nepotism in our country

    Citizens Friday, 22 September 2023 08:18 PM

Surely Ali Sabry knew the consequences if he took his son to such an event. Why did he do it then??

Tissa Fernando Friday, 22 September 2023 08:21 PM

Nepotism is part of the culture. Friends and relatives are always getting favors. It is embedded everywhere from hospital guard to the top most position in the country. Hospital guards allow friends and relatives into the hospital in excess of allowed quota, and the person holding top most position is appointing his school old boys into all important positions. Ali Sabry case in that sense is nothing. When Rajas were in power, anyone with the name 'Rajapaksha ' was in the preferred people list.

The outrage and total lack of understanding of the citizens of Sri Lanka is fully understandable!!! Al Sabry is on official business, i.e. as a representative of Sri Lanka, at the session of the UN General Assembly. His son is present with him! I think Al Sabry, as an honorable politician, paid for his son's trip himself and not from the state budget !!!???? In Germany, similar to SL, such behavior, if it actually took place at state expense, would trigger huge protests! And the people who demonstrate against such behavior are right!

    Mahila Saturday, 23 September 2023 05:15 PM

"Would trigger huge protests! And the people who demonstrate against such behaviour are RIGHT!" If ever one has the ‘Will and Stamina’ to Whimper or Protest of any Significance, he/she would find his ‘FREE PASSGAE’ to "Kanatte" and minimum would atleast forego the "COMPLEMENTARY" SL Rs 5000, ¼ Bottle of Gal and Chicken Biryani Rice Packet, which is BIG DEAL, for these POOR Masses!!!??? Therefore, they overlook these Misdeeds hoping they would disappear!!!??? Then it's sustained at much Greater Level and Force!!!???

Nepotism, corruption, embezzlement, bribery, racketeering and theft of public funds siphoned to overseas a/cs have become a norm in addition to many killings and accidents. There is a strong possibility that no elections will take place next year, the way the wind is blowing. All because......the majority of Sri Lankans are just naive or stupid at elections.

Nosy Apeynayaka Saturday, 23 September 2023 02:45 AM

Why talk about UN delegation. The Presidential Secretariat is full of political rejects enjoying salaries and perks with tax payers money
