Acting registrar arrested for accepting Rs. 500 bribe



Colombo, Feb. 17 (Daily Mirror) - An Acting Registrar of Births and Deaths attached to the Alayadivembu Divisional Secretariat was arrested yesterday (16) for allegedly accepting Rs. 500 as a bribe to issue a birth certificate.

The arrest was made by officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) following a complaint lodged by a businessman from the Maradamune area.

According to the complaint, the suspect had demanded Rs. 1,000 to register the complainant’s daughter’s birth and issue the certificate, and had accepted Rs. 500 in advance. The complainant was instructed to return on February 16 with the remaining Rs. 500 to collect the certificate.

CIABOC officers arrested the suspect at around 11.45 a.m. at the Birth and Death Registrar’s Office, which is operated from the suspect’s residence, when the remaining Rs. 500 was allegedly demanded.

The suspect is due to be produced before the Akkaraipattu Magistrate’s Court.
