Colombo, Feb 26 (Daily Mirror) - Following the ongoing Island-wide "Yukthiya" operation against underworld criminals and narcotics, President Ranil Wickremesinghe is likely to extend Deshabandu Tennakoon's appointment as Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Daily Mirror learns.
Tennakoon was initially appointed Acting IGP on November 29, 2023, for a three-month term.
Sources said that the President is likely to propose a service extension to the Constitutional Council. However, sources said that Tennakoon could be permanently appointed as IGP bypassing the temporary extension route.
Tennakoon, who joined the police in 1998 is due to retire in 2032.
His potential extended or permanent appointment comes on the heels of the nationwide "Yukthiya" operation launched in December 2023. This initiative led by the Public Security Ministry and Sri Lanka Police aims to crack down on drug trafficking, peddling, and other criminal activities.
However, the operation faces criticism from various quarters. Human rights groups raise concerns about alleged arbitrary arrests, excessive use of force and insufficient transparency. Some legal experts question the legality of certain procedures, while community leaders express anxieties about potential profiling and targeting of minority groups.
Despite criticism from several organizations, the Public Security Minister and Acting IGP assured that the operation ’Yukthiya’ has no personal agenda, focusing solely on eradicating the underworld and apprehending drug smugglers.
Minister Tiran Alles expressed confidence in dismantling organized crime and drug trafficking networks by June 2024.
Acting IGP Tennakoon said that there was significant success in the operation's first two months and pledged its continuation until the ultimate goal of dismantling narcotics networks is achieved.

We have had so many initiatives in the past by the police to eradicate organised crime in Sri Lanka, but all failed. The present operation looks so different and unbelievably promising. This the Acting IGP has earned the right to be the next IGP whatever shortcomings associated with him from the past. He looks very capable and determined we should be prepared to forgive him for his past actions. If anyone disagrees with my comment, can you suggest any other single DIG who has the capacity to continue this operation with this level of intensity ? There isn’t anyone.

Still so many thefts, house breaking are committed every day without let or hindrance. Pickpockets are more active and recently, a passenger on a bus lost his wallet, NID and passport who was to fly to a foreign country for work soon. Most of the crimes are committed by drugs addicts but the government berates dozens of drugs dealers are caught daily.

Number of drug addicts have increased. I had metal vessel at my house to use in the bathroom. Some drug addict stole it at night.

My question is whether you need an IGP to spearhead this operation? In his previous capacity of DIG he could have wiped out the nefarious activities like narcotics, drugs etc. Always personnel are working according to their own agenda and sometimes the public not able to prove their innocence will be netted to inflate the numbers. What these personnel are looking for is personal prestige for the momentum in qualifying for plums in employment. Let us see what will happen in another 3 to 4 years after the promotion is effected ,the true exercise of these operations will reveal the reality culminating in the country being on the square 1 where this Yukthiya Operation began.!!!!!!!!!!

@Jaffna Logic There are cases pending in courts against the acting IGP. The minister also have no patience and express his eagerness. Why don't you too wait for the courts verdict/s? Such matters are not taken into discussion even in the parliament.

@ Jaffna Logic. You see this incorrectly and your personal opinion does not correspond to the laws of Sri Lanka. A convicted criminal is no longer allowed to hold public office in Sri Lanka. Tennakoon should have been released a long time ago. His entire police career is riddled with violations of the law and discipline. Ranil made him the acting IGP against huge opposition from all quarters under enormous pressure from the extremely questionable Minister Alles. Operation "Yukthiya" was started by Tennakoon and his friend in crime Alles for two selfish reasons. Firstly, to consolidate their shaky positions. Secondly, to give selective drug lords, who are protected by politicians, a monopoly and thus higher income . Tennakoon was often seen with these drug lords. Who could better perform the job of the IGP? Any honorable police leader above the rank of SSP. You can forgive him his sins and perhaps his god, but not the law and the population.

Honesty does not pay dividends in Sri Lanka. Violating Human rights, arbitrary arrests, excessive use of force and insufficient transparency are crucial to Police. The person who disregarded them or encouraged his subordinates to disregard the good norms to be promoted IG. Cheers
