The absence of a defence attaché at the Sri Lankan mission in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has dealt a blow to Sri Lanka’s efforts in nabbing organized criminals operating from there, the Daily Mirror learns.
Sri Lanka has ramped up efforts to arrest its criminals hiding overseas - mostly in the UAE.
However, its efforts have been hampered since the absence of a defence attaché.
Asked about the situation, a top diplomatic source said the government would take steps to make necessary appointments to its missions abroad.
Currently, Sri Lanka runs short of 100 diplomats of the approved cadre.
The source said 25 recently recruited diplomats had been referred to the Public Service Commission for approval, but the process had been delayed for more than three months.

Fix the inefficiency at the PSC. Start shortlisting the next 3 batches of 25 diplomats each. Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardane should bring in this efficiency via his secretaries. A small thallu start.

There is no need to appoint military personnel to embassy. Police for police matters, but talking about defense attache is serious backward attitude. Why trump up about lack of government person in embassy when country can't pay back loans, and EPF growth is capped artificially. Country is in a lot of trouble, so have cut back on all but the essential services. Is DM proposing to provide funds to employ staff or where is the money to come from?

You don’t need a defense attaché to coordinate with that countries authorities, why can’t the ambassador to start a dialogue with foreign minister of that country to nab the wanted drug traffickers and criminals living in that country. Is the ambassador is napping all the time or is he incompetent to start a dialogue with that country.
