Colombo, April 28 (Daily Mirror) - “AI is like a sharp knife,” Vietnamese Buddhist monk Ven. Pagnakara Thera said, cautioning the public about the growing dependence on artificial intelligence (AI).
Addressing a Dhamma session held today at the Kelaniya Rajamaha Viharaya, the Thera urged people to rely on their own thinking abilities before turning to AI technology for assistance.
He warned that many individuals, including students, are increasingly misusing AI and slowly losing the habit of independent thinking and memory use.
“Even students now use AI to write essays and emails without thinking for themselves. Earlier, we used our brains to do calculations, but now we depend on AI for almost everything. If this continues, we will no longer be using our own minds. We will be like robots,” he said.
The Thera also expressed concern that some people have begun asking AI for guidance on basic life decisions.
“If we can manage the use of AI properly, it will be safe for us. But if we become dependent on it, it can harm our lives. Therefore, people should always try to solve problems using their own minds first,” he stressed.
He further said that although AI is a powerful and useful tool, it must be handled with great care and mindfulness.
“AI is like a sharp knife. If used properly, it is beneficial. But if used carelessly, it can harm us. In the same way, improper use of AI can damage our lives,” he added.
The Thera concluded by urging the public to use their brains first before seeking help from AI, and to apply technology only when necessary and in a responsible manner.
