Colombo, Feb 11 (Daily Mirror) - The position of the Attorney General or the Attorney General's Department will not be abolished with the establishment of the proposed Independent Prosecutor’s Office, the government said today.

Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayatissa told the weekly briefing to annnounce Cabinet decisions that the Independent Prosecutor’s Office will function with more capacity than the AG's office.

Responding to a question raised by a journalist, the Minister said the new Body will deliver justice to the people more efficiently.

"It will be free of any allegations such as the AG's Department had to face recently," he said.

One of the most corrupt and politicized departments. Every time a bribery or corruption case is brought up, they quash it saying insufficient evidence or some other cock and bull story. The incumbent head is a stooge of the previous government.

You can't just keep creating different committees and organizations because you don't agree with a legal judgement. The AG's department is meant to be run as a non political organization. Everyone has to learn to respect the legal courts of a country.

1. There is no judgment yet. 2. The AG's Dept has indeed got to be non political BUT in the instance under focus the AG's decision does not seem to be "independent" because of very obvious reasons. Perhaps the influence of a "deep state" in operation. 3. The issue is not with not respecting the courts. 4. Its very obvious you are not a Legal Eagle.

We felt help less and frustrated when the cases were withdrawn by ADG s department during the time of previous AG. Cases in point were Malwana court case , case against Rohitha abeygunawardana, and lot of other cases against politicians. It was so sad that people thought that AG s department is controlled by politicians due its pathetic conduct. Hope this government will make arrangements to recover the lost dignity of AG s department once again.

You can only respect any boday either a government body or private sector only as long as it runs efficiently and without siding anyone or favour. The moment corruption and favouration starts then the head of that body or the body itself will not have any recognition and will be of no use..

Independant Prosecutors Office (IPO) will work well as long as the politicians are honest and do not interfere with their work. AG did good work but eventually with crooked politicians interfering they lost control in some areas of their practice. So when the government changes one day the crooks will again control the IPO. My point is not to have new institutions but to get the officers to work honestly offering incentives/promotions for good work

The traction of the JVP-NPP government is ominous. These people are deliberately allowing the natural death of or making defunct independent institutions so that they can create structures that dance to their whims and fancies. Just imagine this measure was being mooted by UNP, SLFP, SLPP or any other regime. Then, these JVP people would have created so much havoc in the country by organising protests after protests citing that the AG's Office is being politicised. Guys, brace for a "draconian" regime like North Korea.
