A Weekend of Football and Cricket Thrills for Sri Lankans

By: Moiz Mustafa

Sports fans in Sri Lanka are set for a gripping weekend, with English Premier League action on Saturday followed by the grand finale of the Asia Cup 2025 T20 between India and Pakistan on Sunday night in Dubai.

Saturday begins with Brentford hosting Manchester United at 5:00 PM Sri Lanka time, where United will be eager to build momentum after an inconsistent start. Later in the evening, three matches kick off at 7:30 PM: Chelsea face Brighton, a tricky tie given Brighton’s attacking flair; Liverpool travel to Crystal Palace, hoping to keep pace in the title race; and Manchester City meet Burnley, with Pep Guardiola’s side expected to dominate at the Etihad.

On Sunday, fans will shift their attention to Newcastle United’s clash with Arsenal at 9:00 PM Sri Lanka time, a high-stakes fixture that could influence the title picture. St James’ Park will provide a stern test for Arsenal against a Newcastle side strong at home.

Just an hour earlier, cricket will command the spotlight across Asia. The Asia Cup 2025 Final sees arch-rivals India and Pakistan face off at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, starting at 8:00 PM Sri Lanka time. India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, have shown balance between batting depth and disciplined bowling in this tournament

Pakistan, under the captaincy of Salman Ali Agha, rely heavily on their fast-bowling arsenal, with Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf central to their hopes. Both sides have looked sharp, and the Dubai lights will set the stage for what promises to be another unforgettable chapter in cricket’s fiercest rivalry.

For Sri Lankan fans, this weekend blends two passions: the global pull of the Premier League and the regional drama of the Asia Cup. Expect cafés, sports bars, and living rooms across the island to buzz with debate, celebration, and nerves. With football on Saturday and cricket on Sunday, it is a weekend built for sport—and Sri Lankans will not want to miss a moment.
