Colombo, May 20 (Daily Mirror) - Over Rs. 1 million has been spent on the ongoing operation to locate ‘Sumedha’, the elephant that went missing after an accident in Galapitagala, Maradankadawala in Habarana on March 7. The accident occurred when the elephant collided with a lorry.
According to the Department of Wildlife Conservation, despite substantial financial effort, the elephant has not yet been found. Acting Director General of the department, Mr. Ranjan Marasinghe, confirmed this in response to our inquiry.
He further stated that the tusk, which detached from the elephant during the incident, is currently in the custody of the department and is being stored safely. He also reassured that the loss of the tusk is not expected to pose a life-threatening risk to the animal.
The search operation has been conducted with the joint assistance of the Special Task Force of the Police and wildlife officers.
Meanwhile, expressing concern over the high expenditure, Mr. Indika Peiris, General Secretary of the All Ceylon Wildlife Officers’ Association, questioned the justification for spending such a large sum on the operation.
Authorities now believe that the missing elephant, 'Sumedha', is likely to be in the Labunoruwa area of Maradankadawala.
