49 Lankans among illegal immigrants nabbed in Kedah

A total of 49 Sri Lanka nationals were found hiding in trucks by Kedah Immigration Department enforcement officers in Jalan Sultanah Bahiyah in Malaysia today.

The foreigners were believed to have gone into hiding after learning that officers were rounding up on illegal immigrants.

The department's deputy director Aidil Safri Adnan said the suspects were among 66 foreigners rounded up during a four-hour operation which started at 12 midnight last night.

“Those detained comprised 14 men and three women from Indonesia , aged between 19 and 57. They were found hiding at several unnumbered houses in Kuala Nerang district.

"They were caught for various offences under the Immigrations Act including overstaying, not having valid travel documents, possessing dubious travel documents and failure to produce original copies of their travel documents,” he said.

The operation involved 40 personnels from Rela and the state Immigration Department. (Source: New Straits Times)
