Colombo, May 28 (Daily Mirror) - The Post and Telecommunication Officers’ Union (PTOU) has scheduled a 48-hour symbolic strike starting from midnight today, PTOU President G.G.C. Niroshana said.

He said that the strike is being held based on 10 demands, including addressing delays in the recruitment process.

There is no business in the postal department. For example almost all the delivery services are handled by private couriers. Most of the bill payments and traffic fines can be paid through mobile apps. No foreign remittance cheques come by mail any more. It is high time the Govt should restructure the postal department.

Your comment is somewhat correct. The postal department like railway department never adapted to changing customer needs. A team should visit UAE to learn how they transformed their postal department into a vibrant multi service listed company. There may be more than 10000 post offices in Sri Lanka. If they have a hood leader , it could be transformed into a massive business with multiple services.

Only rural communities, especially the financially disadvantaged, would be inconvenienced. This is an archaic institution gasping for breath. They should go on strike for a longer period. People would adapt. Then comes the closing time. Western countries face a similar problem. Used the tax funds saved for the digitization of GOSL services.
