Colombo, April 15 (Daily Mirror) - A total of 412 individuals were admitted to the National Hospital Colombo (NHC) due to injuries sustained in various accidents reported on April 13 and 14, NHC Accidents Ward Director Dr. Indika Jagoda said.

He said that six of them were pronounced dead upon admission.

Speaking to the media, Dr. Jagoda said most of the reported cases were related to indoor accidents, while 94 hospitalisations were due to road accidents.

Additionally, 110 patients were admitted following falls, including falls from heights. Of them, at least 80 required surgical intervention.

Dr. Jagoda also noted a reduction in firecracker-related injuries this year. Only two individuals were admitted due to firecracker injuries, and neither case was reported as serious.

During the festival season the people were very busy to buy their essential commodities. Because of this all roads were congested. Meanwhile the reckless drivers and the motorcyclists who were very careless might have been attributed to these accidents. On the other hand certain persons who were intoxicated and tipsy with the spirits might have injured with other types of house accidents like falling from height slipping and tripping themselves

I would like to mention some according to the accidents. People felt the New Year well mostly but there may have some irregulaties unexpectedly. Whole prices of commodities were less more than last year. Selling of goods were better as those sellers. Economy will be grown after few days due to minimize of corruptions. Happy New Year.

Is it a coincident that almost all the vehicles involved in fatal accidents in Sri Lanka are all made in India ? Accidents occurs mainly due to poor driving but then the impact is mitigated by engineering systems like good brakes , shock absorbers and the mechanism that works against vehicles rolling over or veering off the roads . Indian made vehicles are inherently of very poor technology and it is irresponsible on the part of the Sri Lankan Ministers who are continuing to opt for Indian made vehicles. Sri Lanka should start producing vehicles in Sri Lanka under license from producers belonging to major countries like China , Japan or Europe. Buying Indian vehicles is tantamount to Suicide .

That's a terrible generalisation ! Where else are Bajaj tuk-tuks made ? Considering that 99% travel by three wheelers, it is somewhat unlikely that these accidents will involve Rolls Royce cars. Besides, the recent bus accident was a Japanese minibus. Will you say all Japanese vehicles are unsafe ? The accidents are due to bad training, reckless driving and complete disregard for rules of the road as well as poor maintenance and no roadworthiness checks.
