Nearly 400 graduates and diploma holders have rejected their appointments as Information Technology (IT) teachers citing difficulties in serving at remote areas such as Dehiattakandiya and Dimbulagala, Education Minister Bandula Gunawardane said.
He said the Education Ministry appointed 936 graduates and diploma holders, who passed out from the National Colleges of Education, as information technology teachers some 400 of them had refused to work in the schools assigned to them in remote villages.
“We have practical difficulties in finding teachers for schools in remote villages. We recruited these 938 teachers after an examination. Because 400 of them did not accept their appointments, we will have to recruit another batch from those next in line,” he said.
The minister said the Education Ministry had wanted to recruit 1,000 English graduates as teachers, but only 400 graduates had applied for this job.
“Not enough graduates have studied English as a subject to be appointed as teachers. We have now decided to recruit those who have done their degrees at least in the English medium. If we fail in this exercise, we will look for those with other English qualifications such as those who have been successful in diploma and certificate courses,” he said. (Kelum Bandara)

Maybe you should be the first to start going to these places. Its nice to talk about others being patriotic when you don't have to do anything. I think its only fair they get paid attractively so that they are willing to work in these places than being forced to.

thats a good thing. As there are many 60+ retired educated people in the country, gov can make use of them for education in remote villages. They need not go every day but like 2 days a week. This will help to manage lack of teachers in english, maths, use the 60+ population in SL

I am sure there are sernior citizens who are much more conversant with English language than these graduates and who will be willing to teach English to the students in remote areas with more dedication, if the Minister can come up with a proper scheme. Over to you, Mr. Minister.

There are a few problems. Dehiyattakandiya jobs should go to people from the local area. Even if you could recruit people from elsewhere they will end up leaving the posts. The main reason for this is people don't feel at home. Other reasons are, so much time in hands and lack of activities to fill these (boredom), poor accommodation facilities away from relatives, schooling for children (their boredom) and so on and so forth. This is is the main reason behind the brain drain. People grow in poverty stricken Sri Lanka believing that all their problems will end, once they get a job but face the stalk reality of further hardships. The govt should pay significant compensation to overcome this so that money could keep them in post

What a tragedy ? During our school days in Matara, we had Teachers from India and Point Pedro teaching us science, English & Maths.Dehiattekandiya is an unspoilt place.Something is wrong in present day graduates. Is it the carriculam, moulding of character by the university staff or the self annihilation to face challenges in life. Guruge

Ohhh Good trend !!!, Why graduates (Science/ IT/ Eg./ Agrc.) wanted to beg from the Government??? Just think out of the box , seek the opportunities outside the SL, because the Government unable provide good packages ; even think about leaving the country , because after considerable period of service (More than 5 Yrs) , Government unable to give a transfer ( I am leaving the SL because I do not wish to beg for the politicians for the transfer of my wife , Science teacher )

Have you ever worked in remote areas .I dont think so .I know the difficulties they are going to face as I had working experience in those areas. So better give them some incentives to work in remite areas then they will work. All sri lankan except who had education in intrenational schools had free education. So the people like you who has not utilised the free education properly should pay back first.

dont the children in rural areas deserve the same as children in urban areas. if teachers are not willing to educate these children how can they have the skills to be productive to themself and to the nation. we cannot let them be less treated they(the children) deserve better.if the teachers are not willing to serve these areas there is no point in getting there degrees is it.

So called graduates are spoiled to the bone. They want everything on a silver platter. If they don't get what they want they protest and complain " no jobs for graduates"

Hello Girls and boys, you have done your whole education spending people's money. If you want to have a job in Colombo in air conditioned rooms, first be prepared yourself first. You will not teach something new in Colombo, you have to teach the same thing as in Dehiaththakandiya. Why each govt is bonded to give jobs in govt institutions for these rascals (sorry about this word). If you have your fantasy to live or work in Colombo, payback all public money you have eaten. Children in Dehiaththakandiya deserve more than we "enjoy" now. This is a very simple and a good example to predict about the future of our education. Selfishness and hypocrisy
