29 hospitalised after three-bus collision in Galle

Galle, Jan 26 (Daily Mirror): At least 29 passengers were injured after three buses collided at the Imaduwa-Angulugaha junction in Galle this morning.

The accident occurred around 8:30 am, involving two private passenger buses and a bus transporting office workers.

Police said one bus was stopped when another struck it from behind, causing a chain reaction.

A total of 23 injured passengers were taken to Imaduwa Hospital, while six more were transferred to the Karapitiya Hospital for further treatment.

The motor traffic ordinance of the county is very outdated it should be amended with new rules and regulations. Furthermore the reckless drivers should be severely punished according to the fatality of the accident along with rigorous imprisonments. Thus we have noticed that certain Threewheelar drivers and cyclists have been frequently engaged in wrong side overtaking by violating the traffic laws. The driving licences of such irresponsible drivers should be suspended at least for a period of five years

So far the NPP government used that act to imprison an opposition politician and his wife for keeping un unregistered vehicle. The killer bus drivers were released immediately after arrest while the opposition politician and his wife were not granted bail for several weeks.

Too many accidents and it won’t be long before we end up with a major tragedy. Organisations like Advocata under its amiable CEO Dhananath Fernando had been advocating the overhauling of the public transport system for some time. The government must listen to them. Safety is of paramount importance as my personal experience is whenever I get in to a private bus I start praying because I never know I can get off safely. The driver is in so much a hurry he expects people to jump out of the moving bus at the bus halt. When you request the driver to wait until the passenger gets off he gets annoyed. Mind you this is after some maniacal driving, dangerous overtaking and agitation towards other traffic. I have also seen a lot of divers chewing betel and heard they are a special variety containing mild narcotics! Certainly a number one priority candidate for the Hon President under his ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ concept!

Stop importing "Lorry buses" which do not have even basic safety features for passengers. We may spent many times of money treat injured passengers due to no safety in "lorry buses"

Please don't only blame bus drivers. Yes, the bus drivers need to improve their driving skills. On my last visit to SL I observed that NO ONE can drive properly according to foreign driving rules. What's the point in only bus drivers pulling up their socks? The taxi I was travelling in was booked by the police. Huh? Just look at how drivers negotiate an intersection. Who has right of way? No one.

On a recent trip to Nuwara Eliya, we were stopped five times for licence and insurance checks. But vehicles belching exhaust and, I also observed many with bald tyres on the way were not stopped. Police need to be comprehensively retrained. And jail sentences rather than fines for Bribery should be made mandatory.

Privat bus operators/ Mudalalies,give the drivers targets impossible to achieve. drivers are forced to take risk,unsafe overtaking etcetc
