27 arrested for protesting in violation of court order in Colombo

Colombo, March 28 (Daily Mirror) - Twenty-seven individuals, including the convener of the Inter-University Students Federation (IUSF) and the Secretary of the Allied Health Sciences Students’ Union, have been arrested for holding a protest march in violation of a court order.

Police said the arrested individuals were protesting in front of the Ministry of Health, in defiance of a court order issued against the demonstration yesterday.

The Allied Health Sciences Students’ Union initiated the protest in front of the Ministry of Health yesterday afternoon, with the participation of a group, including the IUSF convener.

The suspects were arrested by Maradana Police this morning.

They will be produced in the Maligakanda Magistrate's Court.

Trade Unions should have a better way of communicating and dealing with the administrations than making a public mockery and a nuisance. At least change the law that Trade Union action on streets can only be done on Sundays and Poya Days between 12 noon and 4pm. Sri Lanka Telecom has 30 Trade Unions and Sri Lanka Railways has 50 TUs and we see both institutes struggling to be relevant and profitable. Likewise many ill effects for the establishments in the current way TUs get their grievances sorted out. Another reason for bankruptcy of the country.

The right to protest does not mean you can inconvenience the public; if they do, protesters may lose the sympathy of the public

This is a good move by the present government. May be, they have realized that protests on the streets will take the country backwards. We all know JVP did this for a long time. Now, it's their chance to control it. Street protests are also a reason for the present unfortunate situation of the country.

So you agree that street protests was one if the reason for present unfortunate situation of the country and 99% of such protests were organised by JVP. The damage JVP has done to the economy is far in excess of USD 200 billions. But they promised during election campaign to bring back USD 18 billion allegedly taken to Uganda by Rajapakshas. But later on they said it was a big lie.

You have to protest in front of the Institution and not in an obscure place. Does the order lacks logic? JVP protested in Public roads and now they want genuine protests in violating a reasonable demand in finding state employment on order of Sri Lankan university merit . JVP protested against private Universities and now they want state employment to be opened for fly by night institutions against local universities graduates. NPP Govt.seems to have double standards which is a basis for corruption and obtaining orders on distorted information.
