Colombo, August 17 (Daily Mirror) - Police said that 257 people have died in drowning-related incidents across the country so far this year.

Police Media Spokesperson ASP F.U. Wutler said the victims include 220 men and 37 women.

Meanwhile, the Police Lifeguard Division has rescued 102 people from drowning — comprising 69 local tourists and 33 foreign tourists, ASP Wutler said.

This is mostly due to the negligence of the local authorities. They should have kept public warning signs in those places to avoid recurrence.

Perhaps, each district should appoint someone to check / implement warning flags in appropriate areas at the very least. Ideally, lifeguards should be based in popular swimming areas. School trips should select known safer bathing areas. Perhaps an app could be designed, provided it is properly updated regularly.

What a pathetic situation is this ? How many more lives in accidents? How many more in elephant and people conflicts? How many more snake bits? How many more in fires? How many more electrocution? How many more from falling from trees? How many more from man made disasters like shooting and stabbing? If any government protect its people from this homicides and man made death what can we say about this quality of this government? Really feel shame about it in this digital world? After all, our literacy rate is 98% We may about to think about the quality of education as well After all we have 4 world religions?
