200kg of heroin siezed in joint operation in Weligama

Nine suspects have been arrested with 200kg of heroin during a joint operation conducted in Mirissa in Weligama this morning, police said.

Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said the Police Narcotics Bureau, Sri Lanka Navy and Coast Guard conducted the raid upon an alert by the State Intelligence Service.

The contraband of narcotics were siezed when it was brought in a small boat. The heroin was found concealed in gas tanks and gunny bags.

The spokesman said a fishing trawler that left for fishing on May 11 reportedly shifted the consignment of heroin into the small boat.

DIG Rohana said investigations are underway to arrest the suspects were in the fishing trawler.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya and Sunil Dharmawardane- Weligama)
