PARLIAMENT (Daily Mirror) - While digitizing the Department of Motor Traffic in 2024, a pilot project of running 200 electric buses will be started jointly with the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) in the Western Province.
President said in his budhet speech that the Kandy multi-transport center project will be started in January 2024 under the loan support of the World Bank to remove the vehicle and passenger traffic congestion in the historic city of Kandy and integrate train, bus and other taxi services.
Rs. 1.5 billion will be allocated for the development of the access roads to this center.
The Railway Department will complete the renovation of the railway track from Anuradhapura to Mihintale in January 2024 and Rs. 200 million will be allocated to set up a large city base on the station premises of Mihintale with transport, economic, container and storage facilities with the financial assistance of the private sector.

I will electrocute myself if this is implemented. The authorities involved doesn't have a clue on how such a project needs to be implemented, costs involved, infrastructure and Operational modem.

Good plan, only if there will be proper maintenance carried out for the buses. Each depot should be given this responsibility with punitive measures for failures.

The issue with transport, is not so much the lack of buses. It is the Sri Lankan perception that owning a car or multiple cars is a sign of prominence and status. Less buses, and install a metro or LRT system will decrease the load on the road. Cos you will increase buses and the number of cars will not decrease as well

I bet, these E buses will be in the road only on first month, after that it will stuck at the depots Gonna be a waste of public money

I hope to be alive to see these buses on the roads at least in the Western Province... Hope that they are low floor buses, as that is the international urban city bus standard. Get rid of all the Lorry chassis buses (Body fitted bus) from the roads, they are unsafe, not passenger friendly and not suitable for Public Transport.

My former bus depot was given 2 Volvo electric buses. As soon as it was plugged into the grid it brought the grid down. Ok, it has been fixed. Imagine 200 electric buses on a grid that can barely survive!!
